Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a serious psychological disorder that can happen to anyone, usually triggered by a traumatic event. People struggling with PTSD may experience flashbacks, nightmares, intense anxiety, or panic attacks long after the moment of trauma has passed. This occurs because neural pathways in the brain have been damaged and reformed by the traumatic experience. PTSD symptoms vary among individuals, but commonly include:

Negative Thoughts

Persistent negative beliefs
and feelings.

Re-living the Trauma

Flashbacks and intrusive
memories.

Untreated PTSD is unlikely to disappear and can lead to chronic pain, depression, substance
abuse, and sleep problems that impede a person’s ability to work and interact with others. PTSD may leave you feeling stuck in a constant sense of danger and disturbing memories.

Being on Edge

Heightened anxiety and
vigilance.

Avoidance

Steering clear of reminders of the traumatic event.
