Trauma of Racism and Intergenerational identity
Racial Trauma
Constant racial preferential treatment, racial dislike, racial violence and abuse leave a deep scar in one’s mind, which gets eventually tied in with anxiety, stress and suicidal tendencies. Racial trauma is also passed on from one generation to the other, so it is deep-rooted.
Racial and cultural identity issues come in many forms, but a few common scenarios include:
- Interpersonal discrimination: Many people face racial and cultural discrimination on a direct, personal level. For example, discrimination by a racist boss might lead to stress at work.
- Structural and institutional discrimination: Large-scale racial and cultural inequalities are entrenched in many modern-day societies. Understanding and facing these forms of discrimination can be stressful and upsetting.
- Micro-aggressions: Everyday subtle blows that are racially charged. These can be verbal or nonverbal.
- Questioning one’s identity: You might be unsure of how to live with different aspects of your racial or cultural identities or wonder how to balance your personal values with those of your racial or cultural background.
- Events that challenge one’s identity: Moving to a new location, entering a new life phase, or becoming involved in new social circles can all raise questions about racial and cultural identity.

More infoCultural Identity Struggles
Being immersed in a new culture allows you to learn a second language and learn different customs, traditions, cuisines, behaviours, etc. However, for many families, bicultural living is an ongoing struggle to balance what is expected and valued in the new environment and their own upbringing, values, and expectations. It’s common to see parenting become more challenging when raising children in Western culture. Many people feel caught between two cultures, constantly feeling unfit or unable to blend and assimilate into the mainstream culture. This may cause differences in values and beliefs, leading to strained family relationships. Especially kids who grow up in a new culture often feel responsible for translating the mainstream culture to their parents. Adolescents who grow up in a cultural home environment different from a dominant cultural environment may struggle with an identity crisis. This generational gap may strain family relationships, causing misunderstandings, poor communication, and difficulties with other family dynamics. This eventually causes mental health problems and behavior issues.
Support from a compassionate psychotherapist can help you work through feelings of inadequacy, guilt, anger, and shame. This can help you balance your dif0ferent identities and adjust to the demands of your bicultural life. I am here to walk with you, help you explore your deeper cultural dimensions, and find the true essence of life.
Challenges of Intergenerational Identity
