Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a serious psychological disorder that can happen to anyone, usually triggered by a traumatic event. People struggling with PTSD may experience flashbacks, nightmares, intense anxiety, or panic attacks long after the moment of trauma has passed. This occurs because neural pathways in the brain have been damaged and reformed by the traumatic experience.

PTSD symptoms vary among individuals, but commonly include:

  • Negative Thoughts: Persistent negative beliefs and feelings.
  • Re-living the Trauma: Flashbacks and intrusive memories.
  • Being on Edge: Heightened anxiety and vigilance.
  • Avoidance: Steering clear of reminders of the traumatic event.

Untreated PTSD is unlikely to disappear and can lead to chronic pain, depression, substance abuse, and sleep problems that impede a person’s ability to work and interact with others. PTSD may leave you feeling stuck in a constant sense of danger and disturbing memories.

The Importance of Early Treatment

Early treatment is crucial for overcoming PTSD. The sooner it is addressed, the easier it is to manage and reduce symptoms. Avoiding treatment can harm your relationships, quality of life, and ability to function. If you or someone you know is struggling with PTSD, seek professional help to start the journey towards healing and recovery.

PTSD Treatment Options

I offer two evidence-based treatments for PTSD: Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

CPT is a highly structured treatment involving one-on-one sessions (a minimum of 12 sessions) designed for individuals affected by trauma memories and thoughts.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

In addition to CPT, I provide Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which focuses on developing a new range of skills to manage distress and improve overall functioning. Clients who complete trauma treatment with these therapies often experience significant reductions in PTSD symptoms.
